New Atheism…

In Christianity, atheism, christian, theism, theology on December 17, 2006 by Knight

Douglas Groothuis has some interesting thoughts on Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins. They’re the guys that are preaching this “New Atheism” which I guess is basically Old Atheism with an attitude.

1. These two books are offering nothing new by way of critiques of theism or specific religions. Christian philosophers and biblicla scholars have responded to all the charges before. What is different is their severe tone. Religion is not just wrong, but terribly dangerous. It should scarcely be tolerated. To demonstrate this, one must argue that a belief is both false and deleterious. That doubles the intellectual load–and produces a fair amount of bombast.

2. Harris especially assumes that all believers are fideists or rely on the worst possible arguments. This is false. A debate with Bill Craig would demonstrate this in short order. When Harris’s book was discussed on NPR, the host said, “Should religion, which is based on faith and not reason, have a say in public policy?” Talk about the fallacy of the complex question! Some people’s faith is unsupported by evidence and argument, but this is not true of all religions people. It is not true of me, for example. So, the good old straw man makes another appearance to supply the fallacy.

3. Harris and Dawkins are correct in demanding that religious worldviews supply good arguments for their beliefs. Blind faith is no virtue in Christian teaching and apologetics is not optional (Acts 17:16-34; 1 Peter 3:15; Jude 3).

God Hates Figs

In Christianity, christian, funny, god, humor on November 17, 2006 by Knight

I just learned today that God hates figs. Figs are the source of all the evils in the world. A plague upon humanity and an abomination in the site of the Lord.

Those are figs in the picture. They’re really gross looking. I can see why God would hate them just because they’re ugly.

Figs are associated with science, which is inherently anti-religion. The most popular fig snack, the one your children are probably eating right now, is named after Sir Isaac Newton, one of the leading figures of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment, of course, was when all those painters dug up dead bodies so they could draw naked people more accurately. That led to the French Revolution and the fall of Western Civilization. And it’s still going on today!

Dear God

In Christianity, Joke, christian, funny, god, humor, religion on November 1, 2006 by Knight

A little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.00.

When the postal authorities received the letter to God, USA, they decided to send it to the President. The president was so amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The president thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill and sat down to write a thank-you note to God, which read:

Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Washington, DC., and those assholes deducted $95.00 in taxes.
